Counterplay was developed in response to the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission publication Bringing Them Home: A guide to the findings and recommendations of the national inquiry into the separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families. In a completely darkened room, lit only by ambient light from the adjacent corridor, case studies lined the main wall that moved from semi-visibility to complete invisibility as the light diminished. Further into the room a water fountain dripped at controlled rates reflecting the statistical differences between children who were and were not separated from their families.
